Setting up taxes manually

You can manually configure your Ecwid store to calculate tax rates for different regions, zones, countries. Manual taxes can be used by merchants that are located in countries which are not covered by automatic taxes or by merchants that sell differently taxed products.

How to set up

For example, you need to create 7.5% tax for California.

  1. Go to your Ecwid control panel → Shipping and Pickup → Zones.
  2. Click New Zone.
  3. Change the name of the created destination zone.
  4. Click Add state... and add the necessary state (e.g. "United States: California").
  5. Save the changes.
  6. Go to Settings → Taxes.
  7. Click New Tax.
  8. Enter your tax name and define other settings.
  9. Click New Rate. Select the zone created earlier and enter the tax rate (for example 7.5%).
  10. Save the changes.

If you have many destination zones, repeat the steps above for each of them.

If you want to set up the same rate for several different states, you can create a zone consisting of these states and set up a tax rate for this zone.

If you want to charge different tax rates depending on customer's address with zip code accuracy, consider using automated taxes (available for users from US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and European Union). You can enable them in one click and correct tax rates will be calculated automatically in your store.

There is also a pre-defined zone named "Other zones" that defines tax for locations matching no zone mentioned in the rate list.

Assigning tax rates to products

When you set up taxes manually in Ecwid control panel → Settings → Taxes → Manual, you can tick the Enabled by default for all products option to automatically apply a tax rate to all products:

In case you sell differently taxed products in the same store, you can assign different tax rates to them (or turn off taxes for some of your products/services):

  1. Go to Ecwid control panel → Catalog → Products;
  2. Click on a product to get to its editing page;
  3. Click Tax and Shipping tab;
  4. Scroll down to Taxes and enable the tax rates that should apply to this product (or disable all tax rates if it's a non-taxable product/service).
