Customizing your order ID

When a customer places an order in your online store, that order gets a unique ID that consists of five random numbers and letters, e.g., XK45J. A unique ID helps you and your customers to distinguish one order from another. The order ID is displayed on the Orders page, in invoices, and email notifications.

You can customize order IDs with a custom prefix and suffix to fit your business needs. That way, orders will have your own words or letters instead of random ones.

For example, if you run several online stores, you can add a unique prefix for each store. Say, use the PLANT- prefix for a store that sells home plants, and the TEA- prefix for your tea store. That way, you will clearly see in your reports the source of orders.

To customize your order ID format:

  1. From your Ecwid admin, go to Settings → General → Cart & Checkout.
  2. Scroll to Order ID, and click Edit Order ID format.
  3. Enter a prefix or suffix that you want to appear in your order IDs.
  4. Click Save. You will see the preview of your order IDs on the right:

Changes will apply to orders that you receive after changes. Order IDs of previous orders placed before the change will remain the same.
