GST charges for Ecwid merchants located in New Zealand

Starting December 1, 2019, goods and services tax (GST) applies to overseas businesses that sell low-valued goods, online services, or digital products to New Zealand consumers. Ecwid online shopping cart is considered an online service and must comply with the changes. Thus, purchasing an Ecwid paid plan or buying app on the Ecwid App Market from New Zealand will include the 15% GST.

In case you have a GST number, you can specify it in your Ecwid admin to avoid double charging.

How does Ecwid charge GST for New Zealand merchants

Ecwid automatically detects your country based on your IP address. Ecwid plan prices and paid app prices for New Zealand will include 15% GST.

When choosing an Ecwid plan on the Billing and Plans page in your Ecwid admin, you will see a plan price without the 15% GST. Once you proceed to checkout, you will see the final price with the included GST.

In case Ecwid incorrectly detects your country, you can edit your location from the Ecwid admin → Settings → General → Store Profile tab or the Change country drop-down menu during the billing process.

Waiving taxes with a GST number

With a GST number you can avoid paying additional 15% when purchasing an Ecwid plan or any of Ecwid paid apps. All you have to do is to add your GST number to your Ecwid admin and zero-rate the GST.

To submit your GST to Ecwid:

  1. From your Ecwid admin, go to Profile → Billing and Plans.
  2. Click Enter your GST number to waive taxes.
  3. Enter your GST number.
  4. Click Save.

You can also enter your GST Registration Number while paying for an Ecwid plan. During the checkout, enter the GST number to the corresponding field to waive taxes.

Once you add your GST Registration Number, it is saved in your store profile.
