Here you can find the answers on the most popular questions about online payments in Ecwid:

Can I use a payment gateway that is not on the supported list?

Yes. If you do not see a desired payment gateway in the list above, you can connect your Ecwid store with it using Ecwid Payment API. You can develop a custom integration yourself or hire a third-party professional for this task.

Ecwid Customization experts can help you to connect your store with a payment system of your choice — complete this form and we will get back to discuss the details and provide a quote.

How can I accept payments without redirecting my customers to the payment provider’s website?

Several payment providers support a form within your Ecwid store. This way, your customers can be assured of a secured payment without leaving your site. Enable one of the following to avoid redirection: Square, StripeChase Integrated Payments Powered by WePayAmerican ExpressPayeezy, TransFirst, Payleap, Clover payment gateway.

How can I change the payment method name?

To edit the name of the payment method:

  1. From your Ecwid admin, go to Payment.
  2. Find the payment method you want to change.
  3. Click Actions.
  4. Click Edit.
  5. Change the payment method name and add a description if needed.

Customers will see the updated payment method upon checkout.

How to sort payment methods?

You can set the order in which payment methods appear at the checkout for your customers:

  1. From your Ecwid admin, go to Payment.
  2. Click Actions → Sort next to any payment method.
  3. Drag and drop payment methods to put them in the desired order.
  4. That’s it! Changes are saved automatically.
To encourage customers to pay with a certain payment method, put that method on the first place in the list of payment methods. Thus, it will be selected by default at the checkout.

What is "transaction type"?

When setting up some online payment methods in your store (for example Authorize.NetPaypal Payflow link, American Express, Payeezy, TransFirst Transaction Express, and others), you can choose a Transaction Type - it is an option that allows you to set how you will charge your customers' cards. This option has two values:

Authorize. The payment gateway checks a customer's card balance. If it is enough to pay for the order, it returns a positive response. Otherwise, it returns a failed attempt. Customer is not charged automatically, gateway just checks if the transaction is possible and if there is enough money on the card balance. To actually charge the customer, store owner logins to their account with the payment gateway and clicks a special button. Only after that the payment gateway takes the money from the customer's card.

Sale. The payment gateway checks a customer's card balance. If it is enough to pay for order, it charges the customer immediately and returns a positive response.

You can select the method that suits your needs best.

Can I add a surcharge to use a payment method?

Usually, a payment processor charges a service fee for processing credit cards. You may want to add a surcharge for customers to use a payment method powered by this provider in order to be compensated for their fees. While some payment providers have a tool to add a surcharge to the purchase amount, others like PayPal do not allow it.

We suggest that you consider changing product prices to absorb such cost. In case you sell products that require shipping, you can set a Handling fee to cover your expenses (it is applied to all orders regardless of the payment method).
